What is the Appalachian Trail? The Appalachian Trail (AT) is one of America's most famous and toughest hiking trails. It stretches 2,198 miles (3,537 km) from Springer Mountain in Georgia all the way to Mount Katahdin in Maine. Hikers try to finish it within 365 days. Every year, over 3,000 people try, but only about one-third finish it. Dale Sanders' Adventure: Dale, who goes by the nickname 'Grey Beard,' finished the AT on August 31, 2026, at age 91. He started on September 6, 2025, in West Virginia. Instead of starting in the middle, he wanted to see the beautiful autumn colors in Georgia. How did he hike? He walked about 12 miles (19 km) each day and took one rest day every week. He took a break during the cold winter and started again when spring arrived. Challenges and Bumps: He fell 71 times! The biggest one happened on a mountain in Vermont, where he got a few scrapes and scratches. Later, he felt numbness in his arm and had to visit the hospital, but luckily, it was just a pinched nerve! Even when he was only 1,000 feet (304 m) away from the final peak, he lost his balance, but he got right back up and finished. Why is this a big deal? Dale first set the record in 2017 at age 82. When his friend 'Sunny' broke it at age 83, Dale decided he wanted his title back! Other Amazing Adventures: Dale has paddled the Mississippi River by canoe, walked across the Grand Canyon, and even paddled the Mississippi River again at age 87. Did you know? The trail crosses 14 states and is home to over 2,000 types of plants and animals. Walking 12 miles a day is twice as much as what most adults walk in a whole week! Questions for Curious Kids: Why is it hard to finish in 365 days? Because the trail is very long and steep! How did Dale do it? By eating healthy, exercising, and always staying positive. What animals did he see? Bears, deer, birds, and sometimes baby deer. How does this help us? Dale proves that age is just a number. No matter how old you are, you can make a plan and reach your goals. His story shows that with hard work and a love for nature, you can do anything. Conclusion: 91-year-old Dale Sanders proved that you are never too old for an adventure. He is a huge inspiration to everyone to get outside and chase their dreams!
