What Is a Likweli? Scientists in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have found a brand-new monkey called the Likweli. It is a special kind of black monkey that loves to live high up in the trees. The Likweli is the fifth new type of African monkey discovered in the last 75 years! Where Does It Live? The Likweli lives in the deep, green forests of Lomami National Park. The park is 656 square miles big—that's as large as a small country! The first picture of a Likweli was taken in 2008, but it was too blurry to see clearly. In 2018, a researcher named Jean-Pierre Kapale finally spotted one and took clear photos to show scientists everywhere. Later, a team led by John Hart saw 114 of them! In April 2021, park guards found three Likweli that had been hunted for food. Scientists were able to use these to study their DNA and confirm that they were indeed a brand-new species. What Makes It Special? The Likweli has a bright orange-cream patch around its nose and mouth, gray skin on its cheeks, and a patch of white fur near its tail. It also has a fun crest of spiky hair on its head! Adults weigh about 15 pounds, which is the size of a small dog. They also have a loud, roar-like call that you can hear from a long way away. Scientists think their closest relative is the black colobus monkey, which lives 700 miles away. They probably separated from the same family tree 4 to 5 million years ago.
