A Tyrannosaurus rex (T. rex) skeleton named "Gus" sold for a record-breaking $50.1 million at a Sotheby's auction in New York on July 14, 2026. The winning sale came after a fierce 10-minute bidding war. The final price far exceeded the fossil's pre-sale estimate of $20 million to $30 million. It also broke the previous dinosaur fossil auction record of $44.6 million set by "Apex," the Stegosaurus, in 2024.

Gus's journey to the auction block began by chance. In 2021, a team from Theropoda Expeditions was wrapping up a dig on a cattle ranch in Harding County, South Dakota. On a whim, the professional fossil-hunting company decided to explore a new area. Within hours, they uncovered the T. rex's toe bone fossil. Archeologists spent the next three summers digging through ground to recover the bones. This was followed by three more years of careful cleaning and assembly.

The finished skeleton was named after the ranch's owner, Gary "Gus" Licking, who passed away during the excavation. It is one of the largest and most complete T. rex fossils ever discovered. Standing 12.5 feet (3.8 m) tall and 38 feet (11.5 m) long, it comprises 183 bones. Together, they make up about 61 percent of the dinosaur’s skeleton by bone count and up to 80 percent by mass. Gus’s massive skull is so heavy that Sotheby's had to use a lightweight replica on the mounted skeleton. The real skull was displayed separately in a custom case.

Among Gus’s rarest features are 30 of its 32 belly ribs, called gastralia. These fragile bones are rarely preserved in dinosaur fossils. Gus also has healed fractures and bite marks from another tyrannosaur. These signs reveal some of the challenges the dinosaur faced during its life.

Whether Gus will be available to scientists is still unknown. The winning bidder has chosen to remain anonymous, leaving researchers unsure where the fossil will end up. However, there is reason for hope. Some previous buyers of famous dinosaur fossils have loaned them to museums. Scientists hope Gus's new owner will do the same.

Regardless, the fossil sale has reignited debate within the scientific community. Researchers worry that soaring prices could lead more fossils to end up in private collections, where they may be unavailable for scientific research or public viewing.
