Barn owls usually live on farms, in grassy fields, or in the countryside, where they hunt for snacks like mice at night. But one extra-curious owl, named Little Reg, found himself in a very strange place: 70 miles away from any land!

During a sailing race, a group of British Army soldiers saw the very tired bird. Little Reg tried to land on their boat a few times but kept falling into the chilly water. Finally, he made it onto the deck, and the kind soldiers gently picked him up.

The soldiers called him Little Reg and kept him cozy and warm for 24 hours while waiting for help. Soon, a lifeboat crew from the Caister Independent Lifeboat arrived to rescue the owl and take him to the RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre.

At the animal hospital, vets and volunteers are taking great care of Little Reg. Even though his name is Reg, they discovered he is actually a girl! She has already eaten a yummy mouse and is starting to feel much better after her long, scary trip.

Why was a barn owl so far away from home? Sometimes, barn owls travel very far if they can't find enough food or if the weather pushes them away. They can even end up on boats or in the ocean if they get stuck in a big storm.

The RSPCA helps animals that are hurt, lost, or in trouble. They provide food, medicine, and a safe bed. Once an animal is healthy and strong again, the RSPCA lets them go back home to the wild.

Did you know? Barn owls have special, fuzzy feathers that help them fly silently. This lets them sneak up on mice without making a sound! They also have amazing eyes that let them see perfectly in the dark.

How can you help? First, keep your pets inside at night to help wild animals stay safe. Second, if you spot an injured animal, ask a grown-up to call a local wildlife rescue instead of touching it yourself. Finally, learn about the cool animals in your neighborhood and how to protect their homes.

Little Reg’s rescue shows that when soldiers, boat crews, and animal lovers work together, they can save lives! It also shows that even the smallest creatures can have giant adventures.

In the future, scientists want to study how owls travel so they can protect them from dangers at sea. For now, Little Reg is getting better every day and will hopefully fly back to a peaceful meadow soon. Little Reg's story reminds us that being kind and helping others can save the day, no matter how far away they wander!
