On July 14, 2026, a T. rex skeleton named 'Gus' was sold at a big auction in New York. It was a very exciting event! After a fast-paced 10-minute battle between bidders, Gus sold for $50.1 million. That is way more than the $20 to $30 million experts expected! Gus even broke the record set by 'Apex,' a Stegosaurus who sold for $44.6 million back in 2024. Gus was found by accident in 2021 by a group called Theropoda Expeditions. They were finishing up a dig on a ranch in South Dakota when they decided to look in one more spot. Just hours later, they found a toe bone! It took three summers to dig up the rest of the skeleton and another three years to clean and put the bones together. The dinosaur was named after Gary 'Gus' Licking, the owner of the ranch where it was found. Gus is huge! Standing 12.5 feet tall and 38 feet long, the skeleton is made of 183 bones. Because the skull is so heavy, the skeleton on display uses a special lightweight copy, while the real skull sits nearby in a special glass case. Gus is special because he still has 30 of his 32 'belly ribs,' which are very rare. He even has some old bite marks and broken bones that healed long ago, showing us what life was like for him. We don’t know who bought Gus yet because they want to stay secret. Many scientists are worried that because the price is so high, fossils like Gus might go to private homes instead of museums where everyone can learn from them. However, some people who buy fossils do lend them to museums, so scientists are hoping that will happen with Gus. Even with the mystery, Gus is a record-breaking star that has everyone talking!
