NASA has released pictures of the Moon's surface that show the crater made when a SpaceX rocket crashed into it. The remaining part of the rocket was about as tall as a five-storey building and scientists say it was moving at about 5,400 miles per hour. It hit the Moon on the morning of August 5, but the impact could not be seen from Earth and it posed no danger to us. The event let scientists compare pictures taken before and after the crash to see exactly how the Moon's surface changed. You might have already seen some before-and-after pictures taken by South Korea's Danuri Moon orbiter that showed changes to the lunar landscape. The newest pictures from NASA show the crater in the greatest detail yet. They were taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and engineers made sure the spacecraft was tilted so the camera pointed at the crater each time it passed. Scientists estimate the crater is about 18 metres wide – a little less than the length of two buses – and less than three metres deep. The abandoned rocket hit the Moon with the force of about three tonnes of dynamite, after drifting in space for more than a year.
