## New York’s Halloween Dog Festival

Every year, the last week of October, Manhattan’s Tompkins Square Park turns into an adventure zone for dogs and their owners. Celebrating its 36th year, the festival brings together animal rescue groups to raise money for street dogs and makes thousands of people smile.

### Why It Matters

Dogs form close bonds with humans. Some dogs live on the streets and struggle with food, health, and shelter. This festival helps rescue groups get the money they need and boosts people’s love for animals. That means more dogs can find safe homes in the future.

### Costume Heroes

- **Snickers (Shih Tzu)** – Dressed in a New York Knicks jersey and sat inside a giant basketball. He won a $1,000 toy prize.
- **Payton (Cavapoo)** – Wore a hot‑dog costume with his family and made everyone laugh.
- **Two French Bulldogs** – Sparkled in balloon‑style outfits and shiny crowns, looking like “animal kings.”
- **Sammy (German Shepherd)** – Showed off the most original costume, battling a giant wind on a windy day.
- **Tiger Blaze** – Decorated a trash can stylishly, creating “trash fashion” with a New York pigeon.

### Did You Know?

- **Dog Eyes** – Dogs gather more light for night vision, so they see better in the dark.
- **Choosing Costumes** – Costumes are usually light and breathable so dogs stay comfortable.

### Questions Kids Ask

1. **Why do dogs wear costumes?** – Costumes let dogs and owners have fun and help rescue groups raise money.
2. **Can dogs wear many costumes?** – Yes, but make sure the costume doesn’t hurt their comfort.
3. **Who joins the festival?** – Animal rescue groups, pet owners, and the community.

### Impact on Our Lives

Events like this teach kids about animal love, responsibility, and community awareness. Kids see how kind and loyal dogs are, building empathy. It’s a fun learning environment where kids learn about different dog breeds and costumes.
