Saffie's Story

Saffie is a 6-year-old girl who has a rare eye disease called Leber's Congenital Amaurosis (LCA). This disease stops the cells in the eye from making a special protein that we need to see. Saffie's mom, Lisa, said that her daughter started wearing glasses when she was 2 years old, and the doctors said that without treatment, she would be completely blind by the time she was 30.

Gene Therapy

But Saffie can now see thanks to a new treatment that the doctors used. This treatment is called gene therapy, which is a new medical technique that is still being tested. It works by putting healthy genes into a person's cells to fix the bad genes that are causing the disease. Saffie had the procedure done on one eye in April 2025 and on the other eye in September. A healthy copy of the gene was injected into each eye.

After the Treatment

Saffie's mom, Lisa, said that the results of the treatment are amazing. Saffie can now see in low light and can do many things more easily. For example, she can participate in activities like Halloween celebrations with her family. Saffie's peripheral vision has also improved, which means she can see things and movements outside of her direct line of sight.

The Future of Gene Therapy

Dr. Rob Henderson from Great Ormond Street Hospital said that with this treatment, they have shown for the first time that gene therapy can strengthen the visual pathways in babies and young children with this rare eye disease. Scientists say that this treatment can improve vision and strengthen the visual pathways during a critical period of brain development, but it's not a cure for the disease. More improvement is seen when the treatment is given to young children, especially during the critical period of visual development.
