Barn owls are usually found on farms, in grasslands, or open countryside, where they hunt small mammals at night. But one curious owl, later called Little Reg, ended up 70 miles away from any land.
During a sailing race, a group of British Army soldiers spotted the exhausted bird. Little Reg had tried to land on their boat several times, falling into the sea each time. Finally, he landed on the deck and the soldiers carefully picked him up.
The soldiers named him Little Reg and kept him warm for 24 hours while they waited for help. A nearby lifeboat crew from the Caister Independent Lifeboat then rescued the owl and brought him to the RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre.
At the wildlife centre, Little Reg is being cared for by veterinarians and volunteers. He is a female owl who has already eaten a mouse and is slowly recovering from the long journey.
Why would a barn owl be so far from land? Barn owls sometimes travel long distances, especially when food is scarce or weather forces them to move. Some owls even end up on fishing boats or in the sea when they get caught in storms.
The RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) helps animals that are injured, lost, or in danger. They give food, medicine, and a safe place to rest. When an animal is healthy enough, the RSPCA releases it back into its natural habitat.
Did you know? Barn owls have special feathers that make their flight silent, so they can sneak up on mice without being heard. They also have excellent night vision, which helps them hunt in the dark.
How can you help? • Keep your pets indoors at night to protect local wildlife. • If you see an injured animal, call a local wildlife rescue instead of touching it. • Learn about the animals in your area and how to protect their homes.
Little Reg’s rescue shows that teamwork between soldiers, lifeboat crews, and animal charities can save lives. It also reminds us that even small animals can have big adventures.
In the future, scientists will study how animals like barn owls travel and how we can better protect them from dangers at sea. For now, Little Reg is on the road to recovery and may soon fly back to a quiet farm or meadow.
The story of Little Reg teaches us that kindness, quick action, and teamwork can help animals in need, no matter how far they wander.
