The T. Rex of the Seas: Tylosaurus Rex

Scientists have discovered a sea monster from the same time period as the T. Rex, 13 million years ago. This monster, called Tylosaurus Rex, was the king of the 'knob lizards' and could grow up to 43 feet long and weigh 3-4 tons.

Tylosaurus Rex: The King of the Seas

For a long time, the Tyrannosaurus Rex (T. Rex) has been known as the king of the land. But now, scientists have found a sea monster that is just as scary. This monster lived in the oceans 13 million years ago, during the same time period as the T. Rex. The scientists have named this animal Tylosaurus Rex, which means 'king of the knob lizards'.

Size and Power

This huge sea reptile could grow up to 43 feet (13 meters) long, which is as big as a school bus. It weighed between 3-4 tons and had a massive head that was 5.5 feet (1.7 meters) long. The monster had sharp, saw-like teeth that it used to eat its prey. This was different from other members of its family, which had smooth, cone-shaped teeth that were better for catching fish.

Discovery History

The fossils of Tylosaurus Rex have been sitting in museums in North America for decades, but they were labeled incorrectly as Tylosaurus proriger (T. proriger). This sea reptile was related to Tylosaurus Rex, but it was much smaller and lived at a different time.

Discovery Journey

The discovery of Tylosaurus Rex began in 2012 when paleontologist Michael Polcyn noticed some unusual features on a T. proriger fossil from Texas. Years later, paleontologist Amelia Zietlow found another fossil in the American Museum of Natural History in New York that looked different.

Research and Results

Zietlow and her team studied dozens of T. proriger fossils from across the country. They found some important clues, including the fact that the real T. proriger fossils were from around 84 million years ago and were mostly found in Kansas. On the other hand, the Tylosaurus Rex fossils were from around 80 million years ago and were mostly found in Texas.

Most Important Discovery

Finally, the scientists identified twelve Tylosaurus Rex fossils. The most notable one was a massive skeleton found near Dallas, Texas in 1979. This skeleton, now on display at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, is called 'The Black Knight'. The animal had a missing nose tip and a healed broken jaw, which shows that it survived its injuries and continued to hunt.

Conclusion and Future

The scientists published their findings in the American Museum of Natural History Bulletin on May 21, 2026. This discovery could change our understanding of the evolution of these ancient sea reptiles. The discovery of Tylosaurus Rex invites kids to explore the wonders of the deep sea and appreciate the mysteries of nature.

Did you know? Tylosaurus Rex was enormous compared to other sea creatures and had a powerful build to catch its prey. This discovery is an important step in the scientists' journey to uncover the secrets of nature.
