New Children's Laureate

The new Children's Laureate for 2026-2028 will be announced on Tuesday, 7 July. We'll find out who it is on Newsround and put your questions to them. The Waterstones Children's Laureate is one of the most prestigious roles in children's literature.

This award is given every two years to a writer or illustrator who has made an outstanding contribution to children's literature.

What is the Children's Laureate?

The Children's Laureate's job is to share the importance of reading and books with kids. They work to improve reading opportunities for all children in the UK and encourage storytelling and creativity.

The new Children's Laureate will take over from Frank Cottrell-Boyce, who started in 2024.

What Does the Children's Laureate Do?

British author and screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce lives in Liverpool and has won many awards for his books. His most famous works include Millions, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again, Cosmic, The Astounding Brocolli Boy, and The Wonder Brothers.

He has also written for TV shows like Doctor Who and films like Goodbye Christopher Robin.
