It is a morning full of big emotions for many teenagers! Thousands of 16-year-olds in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are finally getting their GCSE and other exam results today. If you have older brothers, sisters, friends, or family members, you might notice they are feeling quite nervous—it is a very important day for them! In England and Wales, Year 11 students, and in Northern Ireland, Year 12 students, usually head into school to pick up their envelopes. This time, some students in England might even get their results through a new app for the first time! Students are also receiving results for other qualifications like BTECs. Teenagers in Scotland already got their 'National 5' exam results earlier this month. GCSEs are made up of a mix of tests and projects done in class, all of which were finished before the summer break. In England, results are graded from 1 to 9, where 9 is the best score you can get. In Wales and Northern Ireland, they use letters from A* to U. In England and Wales, everyone has to take GCSEs in English, maths, and science. In Wales, students also have to take a GCSE in the Welsh language! In Northern Ireland, you must study English and maths, and some schools also require religious studies. If a student in England does not get at least a grade 4 in their English and maths GCSEs, they will need to keep studying those subjects while they start their next step, whether they move on to A-levels, T-levels, or other courses.
