Exciting news for our health! A recent study shows that a special plan to make air cleaner in London has actually helped children's lungs grow better. Scientists checked on primary school students in London's 'Ultra Low Emission Zone' (called Ulez) before and after the rules started. At the beginning, these children had smaller lungs compared to kids living in Luton, where the air was cleaner. But after five years, the London kids' lung health caught up and became just as good as the children in Luton! Scientists believe this proves that cleaning up the air is a super way to keep kids healthy. Because children’s bodies and immune systems are still growing, they are more sensitive to dirty air. A team from Queen Mary University of London studied over 3,400 kids between six and nine years old. They tested the children's lung power every year. When the study finished, the kids in London had 'caught up' in lung size. Experts were 'stunned' by these impressive results, noting that better lung health now will help these kids stay healthy for their whole lives. While some experts say other things might help too—like more kids walking or biking to school—everyone agrees the results are very promising. Ulez works by charging people who drive vehicles that create a lot of pollution to enter the city. Even though the rule has been debated because it can be expensive for some families and businesses, this study shows it is doing a great job at cleaning up the air that Londoners breathe every day.
